Help trying to go from Outlook 2010 to Synology Diskstation to ipad

I am trying to sync information from an Outlook 2010 32 bit pst file to the Synology Diskstation DS210j (firmware) so that I can use the Synology Diskstation as the CalDav server accessible by the ipad. I need to sync just 1 way from Outlook to the Diskstation. I have just started my trial of iCAL4OL (2.11.21). I really just need the ipad to be able to read the data from the Diskstation (not a 2-way sync).

1. The ipad can communicate with the Diskstation. I can enter the account in the iOS calendar settings on the ipad.

2. I can use iCal4OL to export the .pst into an .ics file.  .pst file is about 6.5 MB.  The resulting .ics file is 5.2 MB. Opening up the ics file in a word processing program shows that it includes data.

3. When I try to sync the ipad with the .ics file on the Diskstation, no entries show up.  The correct calendar is selected on the ipad. I can even add an event and I see a new .ics file added in the appropriate folder on the Diskstation.

This leads me to think that I have a setting wrong setting(s) for the export of the pst to the .ics file. What are the specific settings that I need to have so that the .ics is compatible with the Diskstation caldav server?

Thanks for your help.

Re: Help trying to go from Outlook 2010 to Synology Diskstation to ipad

You probably configured the iPad with CalDAV! Correct?

So you must use the iCal4OL CalDAV Interface to upload the events directly to this Calendar Collection onto the Diskstation.
(Probably you added before the .ics file directly as "one entry" into a HREF of this Collection - this can't work! Every event is stored under a different HREF with CalDAV)

- Use the Assistant [Other] on tab "Who" for initial setup. If this is working, you may skip some steps below (=pre-filled).
- Fill the tab "Who" correctly. Choose your timezone..
- tab "What": [X] 2-Way Synchronization with a Web Solution (CalDAV/GroupDAV)
- tab "How":
URL example: https://xxxx.myserver.net:5006/public/CaldavTest/Test/       Always with trailing slash!
  Login: <Login>
  [Authentication]: <Login> and <Password>
UserID: caldav up firstsimilar organizer singleget      ==> 1-Way-Upload
              add includetasks to include tasks
add debug if you still have problems and mail LOG.txt in ZIP (more info in LOG.txt).
add href if you do not use port 5005/5006 (http/https), because Synology can't handle long HREF addresses (Flag is default for those ports)!
add asFeed if you want to reset events on the server, if modified by iPad
==> All Flags are explained here: http://ical.gutentag.ch/forum/viewtopic.php?id=28

(for 2-Way-Sync it would be: caldav deleted remove firstsimilar organizer singleget older singletasks)

  Select correct OL Folder(s)
[x] Select time period, with rule "from -31 days on (incremental)" .... The past is gone! Do not use a TO-Date (otherwise incremental Upload is not possible from 3rd Sync on - the field "Date and time last run" will not get set..)

You may want to test it now with [X] Simulation - start the Sync on tab "Run" - examine LOG.txt after that!
Deactivate [X] Simulation, save the configuration file Default.ini, and use a link under START - All Programs - iCal4OL ... to run the Sync in background, e.g. every 30 minutes.

Re: Help trying to go from Outlook 2010 to Synology Diskstation to ipad

Thank you for your VERY fast reply!

I THINK that i got it to work and I now have separate .ics files in the server.  However, interestingly, NONE of the calendar or task entries show up on the ipad (iOS5).  I have changed the setting for mail, calendars to sync "All Events". With this, I can see any event that I add into the ipad (and it is also reflected by a new file on the server).  However, the ipad is not getting the information from the Synology server. My next step will be to follow up with Synology.

Thanks again.

Re: Help trying to go from Outlook 2010 to Synology Diskstation to ipad

FYI: Subscribing a Remote Calendar with iOS5 does work - at least with a small .ics file and with standard ports - iCal4OL does generate a correct .ics file

I did a test over http://icalx.com (a free WebDAV provider), e.g:
http://icalx.com/private/<login>/test.ics

Though, not sure where the issue is with Synology. It may be even the size of the file. Test it once with a smaller .ics file, by using
[x] Select time period "from -31 days on (incremental)" ... to filter the upload.

Upload a .ics file always to a subfolder (not in main dir) with iCal4OL, e.g:
http://yourserver.com:5005/webdavsubfolder/test.ics
or
https://yourserver.com:5006/webdavsubfolder/test.ics

Try http (Port:5005),  and https (Port:5006) => SSL=ON on iOS5 for Subscribing this calendar (do not use CalDAV).

Do not use webdav:// syntax... with iCal4OL and iOS5!

Re: Help trying to go from Outlook 2010 to Synology Diskstation to ipad

Synology has an iOS app called DS File.  It allows one to use webdav to access files on the server.  I downloaded one of the .ics files that iCal4OL created and opened in the Calendar app.  No issue! The problem is clearly now either with Synology or the Calendar app in iOS5. I have a ticket in with Synology Support and we'll see where that goes. Thanks again for your quick replies!

One minor suggestion, it may be worthwhile to add the Synology information to the rest of forum posts where you explain what parameters are needed for each type of caldav server.
